Best Book Lists for Jan. 1-7, 2020

Quite a start to 2021

Happy 2021,

Well, we’re off to quite a start this year, aren’t we? This is a literary newsletter and, unless you’re terribly confused, you didn’t come here for politics.

But some things are hard to ignore, such as what transpired on Wednesday, especially since the husband and I live a few blocks from the U.S. Capitol. We listened to sirens, occasional bangs, and, at one point, wondered whether we should flee.

Turns out, no need for us to run for the hills. And now I’m checking things off my bucket list I never meant to include, such as “Witness a coup attempt” and “Be within a few blocks of a stash of Molotov cocktails.”

In happier news, here’s a four-year-old who’s read 2,000 books. (Between you and me, though, I don’t think War and Peace was one of them.)

Stay safe, try not to overthrow our government, and thanks for reading,

P.S. Writer Eric Jerome Dickey passed away on Jan. 3 from cancer. Essence published a list of their ten favorite Dickey books. Together, Dickey’s 29 books sold more than 7 million copies.

People who don’t attempt coups might enjoy Bidwell Hollow, so why not share it with them?
